Men as a predator

In many countries around the world, especially in the portuguese speaking countries, it is still common to kill sea turtles in order to eat their meat and use their shell to make ornaments such as combs, bracelets, rings or necklaces.
In may places, sea turtles are still captured by the local populations when they came ashore to nest. Their meat is considered to be an aphrodisiac in many cultures around the world. Their eggs are also collected and consumed.

Even though sea turtles have had their survival threatened by various factors, their main threat has been human action. Anthropogenic threats include accidental fishing, the development of coastal areas and subsequent degradation of nesting habitats and environmental contamination by chemicals and solid waste, which affect critical habitats such as nesting beaches and oceans.
