Cape Verde

Historically there are records of the occurrence of five of the worldwide existent seven species of marine turtles.

Presently only the loggerhead, nests in the shores of some islands of the archipelago. Cabo-Verde islands are one of the most important spawn places for this species in the world, however and in spite the efforts of the NGO in the field, that develop their actions in some islands, this animals remain under a great menace and may be extinct in eight to ten years from now if measures are not to be taken in this regard.

Recently it was created a national network of institutions, which united their efforts and have since dedicating to the conservation of Cape-Verde sea turtles, in which are Government, research centres, local and international NGO’s, armed forces, police and universities, Capeverdian Sea Turtle Network (TAOLA).
