São Tomé and Príncipe

At São Tomé e Príncipe five species of sea turtles can be found: leatherback, green, hawksbill, olive ridley and loggerhead. From these the loggerhead is the only one that uses the archipelago only as an oceanic habitat.

Several conservation programs have appeared through the years however none has succeeded in the conservation of sea turtles.

Presently there is a local NGO MARAPA that develops the protection of females and eggs in some beaches of Saint Thomas and Price and most recently was created the CTM Comissão Tartaruga Marinha, (Sea Turtle Commission) with the main purpose of promoting the sea turtle protection and sustainable use within the region of Prince Island.

The sea turtles demand for consume and commerce still happens, thus making necessary the change in habits and behaviours through social integration and environmental education.
